Manchester United v Rangers: Europa League – live

Key events
90 min +6: Rangers launch a couple of desperate long balls, but lightning isn’t going to strike twice.
90 min +4: Dessers looks a pained man. Hero status denied him by the brilliance of Martinez and Fernandes, plus Jefte switching off.
90 min +3: Shades of the Southampton match. Now it’s bedlam everywhere but the away end. Old Trafford doesn’t half love a last-gasp winner!
GOAL! Manchester United 2-1 Rangers (Fernandes 90+2)
What a response! Martinez curls a long cross in from the left. Fernandes, ghosting in from the right behind Jefte, meets the dropping ball and sweeps an unstoppable shot into the net! Old Trafford bouncing again, and now it’s Philippe Clement’s turn to look stunned!
90 min +1: On the touchline, Ruben Amorim claps furiously in encouragement. He can’t believe what’s just happened to his team, who were completely on top. But …
90 min: King comes on for Yimlaz. There will be five additional minutes. Old Trafford stunned. The away fans making bedlam.
89 min: That was an awful misjudgement under the high ball by Maguire. But how he was punished! Dessers took a delicate touch to bring the ball under control, and the subsequent spin and finish was incredible.
GOAL! Manchester United 1-1 Rangers (Dessers 88)
Out of nothing, Rangers equalise! A long ball down the middle. Maguire misjudges the flight, allowing Dessers to take a touch, spin and arrow an unstoppable finish across Bayindir and into the bottom right!
87 min: Garnacho dances in from the left and creams a shot towards the bottom right. Butland parries with a strong arm and continues to make up for that fiasco. Probably just as well the save was made, because earlier in the move, Malacia cleaned out Igamane with a mistimed lunge but somehow a free kick wasn’t awarded.
85 min: Fernandes dribbles his way into the Rangers box from the right. He looks for Hojlund with his cutback, but Raskin has read the danger and clears his lines.
83 min: Rangers are inches away from equalising! Rice wedges a glorious pass down the inside-right to find Dessers into the box. Dessers floats a chip over Bayindir and off the base of the right-hand post! The whistle then goes because Dessers was a smidgen offside.
82 min: Hojlund comes on for Zirkzee.
81 min: Fernandes whips the free kick towards the near post. Ugarte flashes a header towards the bottom right. It’s surely heading in, but Butland makes a reaction stop that’s as magnificent as his earlier faux pas was egregious. Nothing comes of the resulting corner. That’s a small moment of redemption for the Rangers keeper.
80 min: Diallo drops a shoulder to get past Jefte on the right. Jefte cynically brings him down, and that’s the first booking of the evening. On 80 minutes! So much for this so-called Battle of Britain. But it’s a free kick in a dangerous position, just to the right of the box.
78 min: Ugarte allows himself to be closed down by Raskin, and is fortunate the ball doesn’t break to the nearby Dessers. United go up the other end, Diallo slashing hysterically wide when presented with a shooting chance just inside the box.
76 min: Dessers fights with Maguire down the inside-left channel. They reach the box and start pulling at each other’s kit. Dessers wants a penalty but he’s not getting one. Maguire shepherds the ball out for a goal kick.
75 min: Igamane works hard again, this time down the inside-left. He forces the ball infield for Curtis, whose shot is only effective as a backpass. Easy for the keeper.
74 min: Igamane does well to bustle his way past Zirkzee on the right. He cuts back for Jefte, on the edge of the D in a pocket of space. He takes a touch and pearls a shot goalwards … but straight at Bayindir. Either side and the keeper would have had a job on.
73 min: A double change by United, who replace Eriksen and Collyer with Mainoo and Ugarte.
72 min: A half-chance for Raskin, who gets on the end of a looping Tavernier cross from the left, but can’t steer a header goalwards. It wasn’t much of an opportunity, but it’s the best Rangers have managed in this second half. Those big early chances for Raskin and Yilmaz seem an awfully long time ago now.
71 min: … so with that in mind, Dessers comes on for Bajrami.
70 min: Curtis holds the ball up on the right flank, before passing back for Tavernier, who crosses long towards McCausland. A weak header drops to Bayindir. Easy for the keeper. Rangers have little or no presence up front in the wake of Cerny’s departure.
68 min: United are completely on top now. Their fans in good voice, sending a signal to their board by serenading Napoli and Chelsea transfer target Garnacho.
66 min: Maguire misses an absolute sitter. Eriksen swings a free kick in from the right. Maguire meets it, unmarked, six yards out, Butland frozen to the spot, only to send his header down and wide right. That should have been game over.
65 min: Now then, that Butland mistake reminded me of something. But what is it? “John Lukic,” writes Shaun Tooze. “Leeds at Rangers.” Ah yes.
64 min: Garnacho wins a free kick out on the left. It’s right by the corner flag. Eriksen sends it in. Butland punches in the correct direction this time. Twice. That’ll give the poor guy a little succour.
62 min: Rangers were already under-strength coming into the match. Three injuries later, the kids are on, and this could be a long second half for the Light Blues.
61 min: Diallo jinks down the right, reaching the byline and pulling back for Garnacho, who takes a touch and should score from ten yards. He sits Butland down and aims for the top right … where Propper heads clear off the line. It should be 2-0.
59 min: Another huge injury blow for Rangers, as Cerny limps off. On comes Curtis. Rangers have now sent on two 18-year-olds in Curtis and Rice, and a 21-year-old in McCausland.
57 min: A shot of Butland shows most of the blood having drained from his face, his eyes focused on a spot roughly 1,000 yards in front of him. Some stage on which to perform one’s career gaffe.
55 min: Malacia comes on for Yoro.
54 min: That’s an unbelievable mistake, one for the ages. United, with their tails up, go close again, Fernandes sending a diagonal wedge into the Rangers box from the inside-left position. Diallo, having sprung the trap, bicycle-kicks over the bar. Turns out he was offside anyway.
GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Rangers (Butland 52 og)
Eriksen swings the corner in from the left. Butland rises highest to punch … but only manages to send the ball flying backwards and into the top right! A comedic howler and a pure gift for Manchester United.
52 min: Yilmaz slips over on the edge of his box, allowing Garnacho to advance to the byline. He cuts back for Fernandes, whose goalbound shot deflects off a blue shirt and out for a corner. From which …
50 min: Cerny drifts in from the right and lets fly. His low drive is heading into the bottom right but Bayindir gets down to claim with safe hands.
49 min: Diallo curls the corner from the right towards the top-left corner. It’s heading in! Igamane heads off the line with Fernandes lurking, hoping to make sure. Rangers counter, Yilmaz crossing from the left. Rice meets it with a half-volley, but leans back and balloons into the stand behind. Close at both ends!
48 min: Not for the first time tonight, Eriksen and Diallo combine well down the right. Eriksen reaches the byline and his shot-cum-cross is turned out by Tavernier for a corner.
47 min: Fernandes heads it clear. Meanwhile here’s Simon McMahon: “Rangers next game is on Sunday at Tannadice, from where Dundee United will be looking to bounce back after defeat in the Scottish Cup on Monday. It would be churlish of me not to congratulate Dundee on lifting the old trophy for the first time since 1910 beating United in the Scottish Cup for the first time since 1956. This despite United having three goals disallowed for various reasons, completely dominating the second half, having efforts cleared off the line, hitting the post in stoppage time and the Dundee goalkeeper being named man of the match. But apart from that a well deserved win for Dundee. And if United do the same to Rangers on Sunday, I’ll take it.”
46 min: A really strange start to the second half as Dalot deals with a long ball by slicing it backwards and out for a Rangers corner. Cerny to take from the right.
United get the second half started. Those two injuries for Rangers, then. Neither Barron nor Balogun have come back out, so on come McCausland and Rice. Meanwhile United have swapped out De Ligt for Maguire.
Half-time advertisement. Prices start at £55 and all sets come with a three-month guarantee. Great value that will be right up Sir Jim’s street.
HALF TIME: Manchester United 0-0 Rangers
Both teams have had good opportunities to score. United have been the better side, though, so none of their players should worry about their manager forcing them to wear the dressing-room TV like an Elizabethan ruff, or whipping them with the HDMI cable.
45 min +4: Balogun, like Barron before him, is able to continue. For what that’s worth with the half-time whistle looming.
45 min +3: Now Balogun needs some attention from the physio, having been clipped by Zirkzee.
45 min +2: Igamane and Yilmaz bustle as one down the inside-left channel, causing the United defenders to drop back in a panic. They nearly break through the back line, but the ball doesn’t fall Rangers’ way, and then Igamane stands on Martinez’s toe to release the pressure on the hosts. For a nanosecond there, United hearts were in mouths.
45 min +1: The first of three additional minutes trundles by.
45 min: The corner comes in. Dalot heads it harmlessly wide right. Meanwhile here’s James Humphries again: “Never in a month of Sundays is that a foul before the United goal – it’s barely even a jostle! Rangers getting bailed out by the ref again though, standard.
44 min: Barron may have hurt himself in a 50-50 with De Ligt. A jarred knee. But he’s able to get up and walk to the sideline. United to take a corner against ten men.
43 min: Martinez pearls a rising diagonal shot towards the top-right corner. Butland has to extend fully to tip over the bar. Before the resulting corner can be taken, Barron goes down holding his leg. On comes the physio.
42 min: Bayindir is fine to continue.
41 min: Bayindir needs a bit of attention having been whacked upside the head in the process of saving his team from further corner-infused humiliation.
40 min: Tavernier curls the second corner viciously in from the left. It’s heading directly into the top right. Not again for United? But Rangers don’t get to add their name to a list already including Tottenham and Wolves this season, because Bayindir claws out from under the bar. Great save under pressure!
39 min: One corner leads to another.
38 min: … so having said that, Igamane has a whack from distance. He aims for the top right, but the ball deflects off Martinez’s chest and nearly whistles into the bottom left. Bayindir does extremely well to change direction and turn the shot around the post.
37 min: Fernandes and Dalot combine down the left to tee up Zirkzee, just inside the box. His low drive is deflected. United are getting on top now.
36 min: Diallo one-twos elegantly with Eriksen down the right, and suddenly Rangers look exposed. A poor pass infield lets the visitors breathe again. But the hosts come straight back at Rangers, Fernandes slipping a ball down the inside-right channel for Diallo, who finds himself one on one with Butland. He slams his shot straight at the keeper, who nonetheless spread himself well to block.
34 min: Fernandes tries to release Garnacho down the left but makes his intention too obvious and Tavernier steps across to intercept. Frustrated yelps from the home fans.
32 min: Bayindir punches clear. Then it’s Diallo’s turn to bring down a ball with snow on it with a feathered touch. He draws a foul from Yilmaz, who is slightly fortunate not to go into the book. A more pernickety referee might have flashed yellow there.
31 min: The corner comes in. Dalot eyebrows it away from danger. Yoro thinks it’s going out for a goal kick, so ushers it over the line. But it’s another corner, this time to come in from the left courtesy of Tavernier.
