Manuel Ugarte has revealed his pride at scoring his first goal for Manchester United in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Everton.
The £50m summer signing from Paris Saint-Germain helped United rescue a point on their final Premier League visit to Goodison Park after the Toffees raced into a first-half lead thanks to goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure.
Bruno Fernandes halved United’s deficit with a wonderful free-kick 20 minutes from time before Ugarte fired past Jordan Pickford with a well-taken volley in the 80th minute.
But there was still time for United to almost undo the rescue act of Fernandes and Ugarte as referee Andy Madley awarded a penalty after Ashley Young was brought to ground by Matthijs de Ligt. However, the decision was overturned after Madley reviewed the incident on the pitch-side VAR monitor.
Writing on Instagram after the game, Ugarte said: “We wanted to bring the win home, but it wasn’t meant to be. Happy and proud of my first goal here. Let’s focus on the next one.”
Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim said of his side’s draw: “I see what the players saw, they know, and what people see. We lost a lot of balls without any pressure.
“We have free men, sometimes we don’t respect the positioning and then we talk about anyone who watched a little bit of Everton in this spell know that they will be really good at second balls, and the two goals are from second balls.
“They are fighting and that’s why you get disappointed. We didn’t play first half but then it’s a good thing… let’s not just focus on the negatives… it’s a good thing in the second half… we are playing the same positioning and it’s more energy, more quality and that makes the difference.”
